Warp Films
In 2001, Warp Films - a creative independent company based in Sheffield and London - was launched. They are known for their unique films which break the boundaries of traditional genres. Many films have been awarded; and several BAFTAs have been won. Some of their most popular films include: Dead Man's Shoes, This Is England, and My Wrongs #8245-8249 & 117.
I think the Warp logo is really effective because it is unique and interesting. It gives the image of a more creative and individual company which explores new ideas - identifying the company for one of it's main selling points. It reminds me of the Batman logo, as it seems to be presented in a comic book style; with the flash writing, border, and background. It is made up of many small blocks which fit together with structure, making it look well considered and neatly finished. I think the style would particularly interest young people, as the boldness of the design makes it stand out in an extreme way. The black and white colours are obvious, yet sophisticated - it looks sharp but not over done next to the main design. I definitely think the image is well suited to it's audience because it holds the idea of the films being different and unexpected. The border of the writing is swept out of the frame as if suggesting that the films are far removed from boundaries.
Film Production and Distribution
Vertigo
Since 2002, the UK Media Company 'Vertigo Films' has been responsible for creating its own selection of independent cinema. Every year, it aims to create at least 4 films, starting with the original aim to produce the companies first film, The Football Factory (2004). They have expanded incredibly since the companies opening, and from last year they made their first 3D film, StreetDance. The film was incredibly popular in the UK and continued to be shown in other countries. It became No.1 in the UK Box Office. Following their success, they made a 3D version of Horrid Henry in 2011, and earned £6.5 million from the box office. They are continuing to produce both 2D and 3D cinema aimed at a wide and exceedingly demanding audience.
Distributers
Momentum Pictures
Momentum Pictures is a UK film alliance. Releasing about twenty films per year, the film distributer has had the most successes of BAFTAs in the UK - including 8 in 2011 alone. Some of their most well-known films are The King's Speech, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, and Amélie.
I feel that the logo is rather too simplistic for the the companies' clear successes and achievements. The company is selling such a unique style which I do not think is portrayed in this design. However, it is aimed at a slightly older audience (than Warp), and is done in an understated way which gives the company a classy image - suggesting that the films are well made with high quality technology. The black and blue work well together, and adds particular definition to the first word. It is subtle but clear - making the logo easy to remember, so that the audience can make connections between the image and the company. The italics helps add emphasis to the words and their meaning. 'Momentum' implies that the films have lots of movement; such as interesting plot lines and unique shots and angles.
StudioCanal UK
StudioCanal is known for producing a range of films of different genres and for different audiences. Previously known under the name 'Optimum' (from 1991 to 2011), the company was known to be a modern distribution company. More than 200 films were released in a year. Now they are known for distributing and producing films. They continue to use some of the original technology, including Optimum Home Entertainment, Optimum Class, and Optimum World. They pride themselves on being able to create a wide selection of films, each as thoughtful and creative as the next. The company has really taken off after the success of the 2011 films already sold across the UK, such as Unknown and The Tourist.
