One of the main problems when considering costume was working with such limited resources. Being on such a low budget for film components, I had to use clothes that were already available in the wardrobes of my actors. I had a clear style that I wanted to portray and whilst the male lead was easy to capture, I had problems finding an appropriate dress for Emily. I really wanted a dramatic prom-dress style with lots of embellishment and a very unique, individual style. One way I considered achieving this was by purchasing an old dress from a charity shop and adding detail by hand. If I had more time available to me, I would have loved to spend more time creating a more convincing character costume. Fortunately - I was able to come up with an alternative using the resources available to me, and keeping to time limitations. My sister, the lead, owns a very large collection of shoes and I was able to find some Irregular Choice heels that were very fitting to my original idea of the dress.

To indicate a more relaxed personality, I wanted to go for quite a laid-back approach, whilst still looking smart. Casual clothes would not suit the fantasy world created for them. I kept the suit very simple, with a plain white shirt and rolled sleeves. I experimented with a jacket but decided that the shirt seemed more personal. This was in order to imply that he is less influenced by structure. You would expect a jacket to be worn to work or to a formal occasion, so in this case he has removed it in order to act more like himself, rather than what is expected of him. To give him more of a vintage style and a hint of personality, his hair is combed back in a more traditional (1920s) way. Although his clothes may be more crumpled, he has still made the effort for Emily; which shows that it is important to him that he offers a good impression of himself and offers her more than what he would expect of himself.

I chose a more basic turquoise dress with minor details, including the one-shoulder and pleated detail on the skirt. The flow caused by the pleates on the skirt makes it more feminine. The colour is positive and bright, in order to imply that she has a cheerful attitude and personality. The block colour symbolises that she has specific views and wants something particular out of life. The twist of the shoes, however, makes her appear more creative and individual. This is a way of her expressing the more unexpected side of her personality - she likes to be a bit different. The shoes are also very pretty in their combination of white, pale cream, and silver. Like the skirt, they indicate that she prefers to dress in a more feminine way as opposed to the more typical modern day 'ladette' teenage stereotype. Her hair is lightly curled but no more than would be expected from a normal day out - this suggests that she is quite laid back and although she takes care with her appearence, doesn't go overboard. This also shows that she feels comfortable with her relationship and isn't worried about 'looking perfect.'
