Plot Summary - Moving On

Darren and Emily are introduced as a couple moving in to a new house together. They are positive about their future together and picture it as more than can easily be achieved. Although starting well, Emily struggles with her new promotion at work after descovering that the music shop is struggling to survive. In order to protect the business, she starts spending several extra hours after closing time trying to find new ways of keeping the shop open. Darren finds this difficult but respects and appreciates Emily's attempts to protect something so important to her.

With his extra time, Darren decides to get out of the house and find something equally valuable for himself. He quits his dead-end office job as a way of promising himself that he will aim and achieve more. After being sacked from his new job working at the box office of a theatre, he meets Kate who surprises him with her care-free and friendly personality. They immediately hit it off and become good friends. Meanwhile, Emily is struggling more and more with the shop and the boss is eventually forced to close it down. This leads to further difficulty with paying the rent of the new home but Emily's successful shifts singing at the local bar gives them a couple of weeks working off next to nothing - spending their money on trips to the cinema, etc. after the long time spent apart. Darren starts to question his feelings for Emily after Kate turns up at their apartment crying after breaking up with her boyfriend. Emily is unconcerned with this because of her confidence in their friendship.

Eventually, they are forced to move out of the house. Emily goes to the bank and is given the loan for her own music shop. They decide to move in to the apartment above. By this time, Emily becomes quite successful and has little time for Darren. As a result, he spends more time with Kate. She tells him her own true feelings after critising him for spending so much time with her. Darren goes home, shocked at Kate's outburst. After arriving back at Emily's shop he realises that he's made the wrong decision and apoligises to her. Emily is upset but confesses that she didn't think that they were working. Time is indicated as Emily makes a success out of her business and Darren continues his life his Kate. They become engaged and Emily attends the wedding. Despite being upset she is pleased for them. The film concludes when Emily steps out of the reception and catches the eye of a tall arty man trying to sell his work on the side of the sheet. At the end of the credits, a shot reveals them laughing as they wait for tea at a coffee shop.
